Baltic Sea in the cold
The Baltic in frost - phenomena that can only be seen in winter
The winter Baltic - a completely different world
In winter, the sea changes beyond recognition. The Baltic Sea, which in summer is associated with holiday bliss, becomes majestic, harsh and extremely photogenic in the colder months. The waves take on a deeper colour, the light is sharper and the coastline takes on an almost Arctic feel. Winter Leba offers images that we won't see at any other time of the year - and it is these phenomena that make staying in the off-season have its own special charm. The Maritime Melting Pot is the ideal starting point for anyone wishing to discover the winter face of the Baltic Sea.
Ice formations on the shore
When the temperature drops below freezing, water from splashing waves settles on stones, breakwaters and beach features, creating amazing ice formations. They can resemble crystals, icicles or a glassy shell with unusual shapes. These are natural sculptures that form minute by minute - each wave adds another layer of ice. In Łeba, such formations can often be seen near the harbour and on stretches of beach where the waves hit harder. This is one of the most fascinating sights of the winter Baltic.
Frozen waves - a natural phenomenon
Sometimes, when the temperature is low enough, the waves freeze just offshore, creating the effect of a sheet of water „enchanted” in stillness. This is a rare but extremely spectacular phenomenon - the sea line then looks as if it has been frozen in a frame. The frozen waves can delight even those who visit the sea regularly. Combined with the pale winter sun, they offer extraordinary photographic opportunities.
Snow on the dunes - the desert is turning into the Arctic
The dunes of the Słowiński National Park in their winter appearance are very impressive. The snow covering the sand creates a contrast that makes the landscape look like a combination of desert and tundra. In winter, one can observe snow structures arranged in the wind exactly like sand in summer. This is the best proof of how unique the local area is - it changes with the seasons, each time showing something completely new.
Rime and winter mist over forests
In the Łeba area, where pine forests grow right next to the beach, the phenomenon of rime can often be seen. Moisture from the sea settles on tree needles, branches and grasses, forming a white, crumbly layer. In the morning, when the mist rises above the shoreline, the forest looks almost fairytale-like - like the setting of a fantasy film. It is one of the most extraordinary visual experiences one can have in winter by the Baltic Sea.
The aurora borealis over the Baltic Sea? Yes - it is possible
Although it is mainly associated with the north of Europe, the aurora borealis is also appearing more and more frequently over Poland, especially in winter. In Leba, the chances of capturing the aurora are greater than in large cities, thanks to the wide expanses of land and the small amount of artificial light on the beach. Of course, this phenomenon does not happen every day, but many photographers have already managed to take pictures of the winter aurora over the Baltic Sea. This is an additional reason to go here in winter - you never know what spectacles the sky will offer.
