Slowinski National Park
Movable dunes are a natural phenomenon of the Słowiński National Park and a unique tourist attraction. They are located between Lake Łebsko and the sea.
Formed from the accumulation of sand thrown ashore by sea waves, 130,000 km2 of beaches are formed. The sand dried by the wind and the sun, blown inland by strong winds, forms high dunes (30 to 40 metres high) with the highest being the forty-two-metre-high Lacka Dune. For centuries now, they have been shifting in an easterly and south-easterly direction, at a rate of 1.2- 1.6 m per year. The force of the migrating dune is immense, as it threatens the vegetation and buries everything it encounters on its path. Its power depends on the strength of the wind, the height of the slope, the dune face and the terrain. The moving sands create a beautiful desert landscape, unique in Europe, often referred to as the Polish Sahara.
