Seaside holidays and allergies - how do you prepare for your trip?

For many people, holidays by the Baltic Sea are a time of much-awaited rest, contact with nature and relaxation amidst the sound of the waves. However, for those struggling with allergies, this dream holiday can present some difficulties. Adequate preparation is key in order to minimise the risk of unpleasant reactions and fully enjoy the holiday time.

The first step should be to consult your doctor before you leave. The specialist will help you choose suitable antihistamines or other symptom-relieving preparations tailored to your individual needs. It is also a good idea to make a list of allergens to which you are particularly sensitive and the symptoms you may experience - this will help you react more quickly in an emergency.

When packing for a holiday, it is a good idea to make sure you have a first aid kit containing not only basic medicines, but also eye drops, nasal sprays, creams to soothe skin irritations and specialised accessories, such as anti-allergy pillowcases. Those who are allergic to dust mites should bring their own bedding or at least protective covers to limit contact with the allergens in the accommodation rooms.

Another important aspect is choosing the right location. Seaside towns such as Leba often offer particularly favourable conditions for allergy sufferers - proximity to the sea and stronger winds can reduce the concentration of pollen in the air. At the same time, it is advisable to avoid heavily wooded areas, parks full of vegetation or meadow areas, which favour the accumulation of allergens. However, care should be taken during strong winds, as they can raise pollen and dust, especially in areas away from the coastline.

A well-planned holiday, tailored to the needs of an allergy sufferer, can be just as successful as one spent without restrictions. Regular room ventilation, avoiding being outdoors at peak pollen counts and wearing sunglasses and hats can further reduce contact with allergens. In this way, seaside holidays - despite allergies - can be truly comfortable and relaxing.
