Running on the beach in Łeba – an active holiday on the Baltic coast

Running whilst on holiday is a completely different experience to your daily training in the city. Instead of pavements, streets and park paths, you can choose a wide beach, and swap the sound of cars for the sound of the waves. In autumn, Łeba offers particularly good conditions for this – it’s quieter, the temperature is ideal for exercise, and the seaside landscape can make even a familiar training session feel completely different.

You don’t need to be an experienced runner or be training for a race. A few kilometres of a leisurely run along the Baltic coast can simply be one way to start the day. During your stay at Morski Tygl, you can combine exercise with relaxation and treat running not as a chore, but as part of your autumn break by the sea.

Why is it worth going for a run by the sea in autumn?

The biggest advantage of running in autumn is the temperature. Training on the beach in summer can be challenging because of the sun and high temperatures. It’s different in autumn. The crisp air and temperatures of a few or a dozen degrees on the thermometer mean much more comfortable conditions for exercise for many people.

The beach itself is changing too. Once the summer holidays are over, it becomes much quieter. You no longer have to weave your way round sunbathers, beach umbrellas or groups strolling along the water’s edge. You can find your own pace and run practically unimpeded for quite some time.

Then there’s the landscape. The autumn sky, the rougher Baltic Sea, the sand dunes and the coastal forests changing colour create a setting that’s hard to find when training in the city.

Running on sand – where’s the best place to start training?

Not every part of the beach is equally suitable for running. Soft, dry sand definitely requires much more effort. Your feet sink in with every step, and your muscles work differently than when running on a hard surface.

That is why people who are just starting out with beach running should, first and foremost, choose firmer, damp sand closer to the water’s edge. This type of surface is more stable and allows you to run with a more natural stride.

Soft sand can be used to add a bit of variety to your training session. A few hundred metres on soft sand will be a completely different kind of workout to covering a similar distance on a pavement or tarmac path.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that the beach may slope slightly towards the sea. If you’re planning a longer run, it’s a good idea to change direction so as not to put strain on one side of your body all the time.

Not every training session has to end with a personal best

Whilst on holiday, it’s easy to fall into the same trap we’re familiar with from everyday life – we start measuring everything. Kilometres, pace, time, heart rate and calories burnt. Yet training by the Baltic Sea can be a completely different experience.

You can run a few kilometres, stop by the sea, walk part of the route and then start running again. If you come across a particularly interesting view along the way, there’s nothing to stop you from taking a break.

An autumn break in Łeba doesn’t have to be a sports camp. Running can simply be a way to get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and explore the area.

For those who run regularly, this kind of training will be a welcome change. For beginners, however, it may be an opportunity to discover that physical activity doesn’t always have to take place at the gym or on the pavement.

What should you wear for a run in Łeba this autumn?

The weather by the sea can be changeable, and the wind chill can make it feel colder than the thermometer reading. The wind is the most significant factor, as it can be felt quite strongly on the open beach.

That’s why it’s best to dress in layers and choose lightweight sportswear that protects against the wind. On cooler days, a thin hat or headband, as well as light gloves, will come in handy. However, you shouldn’t overdo it with the number of layers – after a few minutes of running, your body will quickly warm up.

If you’re planning a longer training session, it’s a good idea to take some water with you. In autumn, you may not feel as thirsty as you do in hot weather, but your body still needs to stay properly hydrated.

A morning workout and the whole day ahead of you

One of the best times to go for a run on the beach is in the morning. Łeba is just starting its day then, and there’s a unique sense of tranquillity by the Baltic Sea. A training session lasting a few dozen minutes can be a great way to start the day, especially if you’re not planning any more intense activity later on.

Once you’re back, you can take your time over breakfast, relax and only then decide how to spend the next few hours. A walk, a bike ride or simply a peaceful day by the sea no longer require you to rush.

This is one of the greatest benefits of active holidays. A short workout doesn’t take up the whole day, yet it gives you the feeling that you’ve made the most of your stay by getting some exercise.

Running together by the Baltic Sea

Training doesn’t have to be a solitary activity. Running together can be a good idea for couples who want to stay active even whilst on a weekend break. You don’t need to be in exactly the same shape or run at exactly the same pace. By the seaside, it’s much easier to take a relaxed approach to training.

You could plan a short route, run a few kilometres along the shore, and walk part of the way back. This way, doing something together becomes part of your leisure time rather than a sporting obligation.

After your workout, you can stop off at the beach for a while. In autumn, there’s no need to rush off to escape the heat or the crowds – you can simply relax and gaze out at the sea.

‘Active Łeba’ isn’t just about running

Running is just one of several ways to stay active in Łeba. If your legs need a rest the next day, you could go for a leisurely stroll along the beach. If the weather’s good, it’s worth hopping on a bike to explore the wider area, or start a more relaxed morning with some stretching or yoga.

It’s not about training every day. It’s much more interesting to combine different forms of exercise with rest.

In autumn, this is particularly easy, as the cooler temperatures encourage you to get out and about, whilst the fewer people around mean you can enjoy the seaside in a more relaxed way.

Active holidays at Morski Tygiel

A stay at Morski Tygiel could be a good starting point for exploring the active side of Łeba. One day you could start the morning with a run, the next go for a cycle, and the day after that limit your activity to a long walk along the Baltic coast.

The most important thing is that you don’t have to stick to a rigid schedule. An autumn break by the sea gives you the chance to tailor your day to the weather, how you’re feeling and your own pace.

Running along the beach fits in perfectly with this sort of holiday. It allows you to leave everyday life behind for a while, get some fresh air and see the Baltic Sea from a completely different perspective. And after your run, you can head back, relax and still have the whole day ahead of you in Łeba.
