SUP on the Baltic Sea – an active holiday in Łeba during the off-season
SUP on the Baltic Sea – an active holiday in Łeba during the off-season
A board, a paddle and the sea can completely change the way you view a seaside holiday. SUP, or stand-up paddleboarding, has become one of the most recognisable forms of water-based recreation in recent years. We most often associate it with summer sunshine and a tranquil lake, but for more experienced paddlers, the season doesn’t always end with the arrival of autumn.
Łeba can still be a great place for active holidays even when jackets replace swimwear on the beach. It is important to bear in mind, however, that swimming in autumn requires a completely different level of preparation to a leisurely dip on a warm July’s day.
Why has SUP become so popular?
One of the greatest advantages of SUP is its simplicity in its basic, recreational form. The board allows you to glide smoothly across the water whilst engaging your whole body.
Maintaining balance requires the use of deep muscles, and paddling engages, amongst other things, the arms, back and core. You can adjust the pace to suit your own ability, which is why, on calm waters, SUP can be both a workout and a form of recreation.
The situation is quite different, however, out on the open Baltic Sea. Waves, currents and wind mean that sailing on the sea requires experience, knowledge of the conditions and proper preparation.
The autumn sea demands respect
A photograph of someone emerging from the Baltic Sea carrying a surfboard can look incredibly striking. However, such a shot requires thorough preparation.
In autumn, the water temperature drops, weather conditions can change rapidly, and the wind can make it difficult to return to shore. You should therefore not treat the open sea in the same way as a calm lake.
Those with no experience should seek guidance from instructors and choose conditions suited to their ability. Sometimes, the best decision will also be to avoid going out on the water and to postpone the activity until another day.
The right equipment makes all the difference
As well as a board and a paddle, it is important to have kit suited to the temperature and conditions. In autumn, a suitable wetsuit to protect against the cold is one of the essentials.
Safety measures are also important, as is using them in a way that is appropriate for the body of water and the conditions. Before setting out, it is worth checking the forecast, the wind direction and strength, the temperature and the conditions on the water.
If we are unsure what equipment is suitable, it is definitely better to seek the advice of someone with experience than to make a decision based solely on the fact that the sea looks calm from the shore.
SUP as part of an active weekend
You don’t need to spend several hours on the water for the activity to become the highlight of the day. Under the right conditions, even a shorter session can offer a completely different experience to a traditional workout.
Once you’ve come out of the water, you can get back to the more relaxing part of your holiday. A hot meal, some rest, and then a stroll along the beach allow you to combine sport with a typical autumn break.
The next day, you can switch things up completely and opt for cycling or a run. This means that a few days in Łeba can be very varied.
Sunset after a busy day
In autumn, the sun sets much earlier than in summer. This has its advantages – you don’t have to wait until late in the evening to see the beach bathed in golden light.
After an active day, you can return to the Baltic Sea without your surfboard and see how the landscape changes. The wet sand reflecting the light, the waves and the autumn clouds create a distinctive picture of the coast in the off-season.
It’s also a time when, after a workout, you can simply wind down. After all, active relaxation isn’t about staying on the go from morning till night.
It’s not just about summer – discover another side to Łeba
Autumn shows that a seaside break can be quite different from a traditional holiday. The beach becomes a place for walks and workouts, bikes allow you to explore the wider area, and the Baltic Sea attracts those seeking more active experiences.
SUP is one example of such an activity. For beginners, it can serve as an inspiration to give the sport a go under the right conditions and with proper supervision. For experienced practitioners, it offers another way to enjoy the water outside the peak season.
One thing is paramount: the sea always calls for common sense and for plans to be adapted to the prevailing conditions.
Morski Tygiel as a base for an active holiday
Morski Tygiel can serve as a base for those who wish to combine a stay in Łeba with a variety of activities. You don’t have to limit yourself to water sports. You can create your own itinerary – a bit of exercise, a bit of sightseeing and plenty of time by the sea.
A flexible approach works particularly well in autumn. When the conditions are right for outdoor activities, you can make the most of the day by doing some sport. When the Baltic Sea is at its most challenging, it’s better to go for a walk, a cycle ride or simply relax.
That’s exactly what an autumn break by the sea can be all about. Not about sticking to a packed schedule, but about making the most of whatever Łeba has to offer on any given day.
And when, after an active day, you return from the beach with your surfboard under your arm, there’s little doubt that the Baltic Sea in the off-season can offer a completely different experience to that of a traditional summer holiday.
